From 14 to 21 of April

The processions certainly represent each of the most important traditions of the Sorrento Peninsula , it is an age-old ritual that every year, during Holy Week , is celebrated by the Brotherhoods of the various parishes .

In the town of Meta they are two , the Confraternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Confraternity of the Holy Cross and Pio Monte dei Morti , have arisen between the end of the sixteenth century and the first decades of the seventeenth . It was the Council of Trent to encourage the emergence of these congregations , in order to bring the masses to a more active religious life .

The company of the SS. Immaculate organizes the ” white procession ” that takes place on the evening of Holy Thursday , that of SS . Crucifix and Pio Monte dei Morti , the ” black procession ” that takes place at night and on the evening of Friday. Until the reform of the liturgy of Holy Week, by Pope Pius XII in 1954 , the functions of Thursday and Friday took place in the morning . On Thursday Mass took place in ” the Lord’s Supper ,” the washing of the feet and the repose of the Blessed Sacrament in the afternoon , around 15:00 , the covenant of the SS. Immaculate , chanting the chant of the Miserere , traveled the country visiting the Altars of Repose ( the Tomb ), which were prepared in the churches of S. Lucy, the Guardian Angels and the Basilica . In those days, processions of various countries were brought in neighboring countries and the custom wanted , the encounter between two fraternities , the oldest ” received the incense ” in honor of his crucifix . Usually in Meta were the Companies of the Trinity, Piano and Mortora ; those of Meta instead went to plan and visited the ” Tomb” of the Church of Rosella , the Basilica of St. Michael, the convent of the Augustinian Sisters and the Church of St. Teresa .

At night, at 2:00 , came the ” Black procession ” that accompanied the statue of . After the Second World War, during this procession , as well as the singing of the Misere was and is still sung even the Hymn ” Holy Say” sung by a children’s choir accompanied by a band . This hymn was composed in 1923 by Canon Raffaele De Gennaro ( a priest of Meta , who was organist of the Basilica , composer and author of the Hymn to the Virgin del Lauro , other hymns to the Virgin Mary as well as performances for elementary school kids of the Sisters of Ivrea during Carnival , etc. When the days of the Catholic University took possession of the Archdiocese of Sorrento Archbishop Monsignor Charles De Gennaro Serena was just to prepare all the singing events that took place in our Basilica . )

On Good Friday , from noon to 15:00 , he preached “The Three Hours of Agony ” to explain to the people the “Seven Words” spoken by Jesus on the Cross , as reported in the Gospels. The priests , in the afternoon, reciting ” the office of Darkness” ( the officiating of Holy Week , with the singing of the Lamentations of Jeremiah the prophet , began on Wednesday and ended on the evening of Good Friday) . After sunset , the procession took place ” of the dead Christ .” During this procession , the children’s choir sang two hymns , a ” Del Calvario “, composed by Don Gaetano D’ Ardia , Priest of Sorrento and the other, ” here is the Victim of Love ” consists in drawing up original , by the master metese prof. Astarita and then modified in 1913 by Maestro Di Leva di Sorrento , the original reason was just the part that starts with ” mortal seeks the Lifeless “, the final part . During this presentation were taken in procession statues of the Addolorata , art work of the masters of Lecce and the statue of the dead Christ , wooden work by the sculptor , originally from Sicily , but transplanted in Meta , Jerome Bagnasco, who built it having model as a man , perhaps a farmer, who came down to ” lay” from Arola . Participated in this procession the entire clergy of Meta. The priests wore only the cassock and the liturgical headdress , with no other insignia , and they were preceded by a cleric who wore a wooden crucifix that still lies in the Sacristy of our Basilica . During the procession, the priests recited the Miserere to whisper in a tone of the Gregorian , but around 1950 was introduced a new pattern created by Perosi . This new tone to the directors of the Congregation of the Immaculate pleased that they decided to replace the old tone even in the processions of Thursday afternoon and Friday night .

To make the new pattern , however, more responsive to the needs of the singers who sang out loud , it was necessary to introduce rhythmic pauses . The “Miserere ” sung in the ancient tones needed a intonator that , in the rear of the choir next to the Prior , with a mighty voice , ” sang ” every verse of the Miserere start by saying a few words . A quest’intonazione choir made up of 3 or 4 voices, proceeded to sing the entire verse ( a verse was sung and an ‘other recited .) Keep in mind that during the two processions on Thursday and Friday night, c ‘ was always the presence of the Spiritual Father of the Congregation or its substitute, to put it clearly in evidence that these processions were ” acts of external worship ” ie Prayers and not just purely historical events – folcloristiche.Attualmente , during these processions , there is only one master conductor that is very different in its functions , from a intonator .
